The Blessing By: John Trent PHD & Gary Smalley

The Blessing by: John Trent PhD and Gary Smalley is a good book for parents and future parents to read.  The book has some real interesting thoughts about how to lead your children into having a high self-esteem, security, and a feeling of being blessed.  This book helped me realize how amazing my mom was to instill a lot of these values in me growing up.  This book can sometimes be hard to "stick with" and read, but it is worth it.

The Waiting Place

If you have ever found yourself eagerly waiting for a letter, someone to call, or something to happen in your life then The Waiting Place by Eileen Button is a MUST read!  Eileen shares several times in her life where waiting was something she was forced to do but learns that it can be a blessing in disguise.  Each chapter contains another reason why you might wait in life.  Wait for a letter, wait for husband to come home, or wait for a job.  Sometimes it can be so hard to wait for things, but this book reminds us that it is God's plan not ours for our life here on Earth.  You will laugh, cry and connect to Eileen and God in ways you did not realize were possible.  While you are waiting or in a happy place in your life, pick up this book and find that the waiting place is a great place to be.

Something Blue

Something Blue by Emily Giffin is the continuation of the book Something Borrowed.  This book is in Darcy's point of view.  Darcy is forced to make huge changes in her life because of a mistake she made towards the end of the previous book.  To help start a new life, she moves to London and stays with a long-time friend Ethan.  Even though Ethan is reluctant to let Darcy stay with him, he feels he can't just throw her out on the streets.  As the book continues, Darcy's "all-about-me-I-get-what-I-want" attitude starts to transform into a much more humble way.  If you enjoyed Something Borrowed, this is a must read to find closure between Darcy, Rachel, Dex and others.  This book also shows that people can change and find happiness in the little things.

Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed by Emily Griffin is a story about two friends who grew up in the Midwest and ended up moving to New York in different ways.  The book starts out at Rachel's 30th birthday party.  Instead of being married with kids in a successful career she enjoys, she is single and a lawyer for a corporate firm she hates.  Darcy, her very self-fish and blunt friend has thrown her this big not-so-surprised birthday party.  Darcy has always gotten what she wants, jobs, friends, and especially men.  She is engaged to Dex who Rachel went to law school with.

The story continues in the point of view of Rachel.  Through a very events, Rachel accidentally sleeps with Dex the night of the party.  Dex doesn't believe it was necessarily an "accident."  The two start seeing each other more often.  Even though, you don't want to see a relationship of seven year and an engagement break up, you start rooting for Rachel.  You will never believe what happens in the end of this book!  This is a must read if you believe in true love even when it's a hard decision to make.

**Note** This book has been turned into a movie.  The movie does not follow the book well and is quite disappointing to watch after reading this book.  Don't go rushing out to see this movie, as I did, after reading the book.  It will really let you down.

No Place Like Holmes

No Place Like Holmes by Jason Lethcoe starts with a boy named Griffin Sharpe who is sent to live with his uncle in England for the summer.  He is a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and ends up at his uncle’s who lives in the same building, almost same number.  His uncle does not believe in Sherlock Holmes style, but begins to grow on it with his nephew’s help.  Griffin and his uncle team up to help a find a kidnapped watchmaker.  With many exciting moments this book is sure to please any 9-12 year old and adult alike.  There are many references to Sherlock Holmes that younger generations may not catch or have background knowledge in which may take away a bit from the story.  Overall it is a great read if you like mysteries with good Christian morals woven throughout.

Lead, Serve, Love By: Gregory E. Lang

This is a fantastic gift book for a confirmation gift, graduation, or a book you might just want to keep for yourself!  Each page in this book has a short three-word ways to help you connect to others and share the word of God.  This book is great for anyone who wants to serve the Lord in simple ways.  One example of a three-word way to serve is “Say Thank You”.  The book then explains how this is important, how to do it, and has bible verses that connect to this simple phrase.  This book gives you the “pick-up” you need and inspiration to do something to help those around you.  This is a book you could pick up every day and do one of the phrases to help you and others connect more to God.  I love how simple the author has put this book together and is very clear.  It is a very easy read and anyone could do something from this book, young and old.  I would highly recommend this book to everyone, especially if you have wanted to serve our Lord but just don’t know how to get started.

Heaven is for Real--By: Todd Burpo

One word: WOW!  This is a MUST read!!!  My mom shared this book with me when I was visiting her and I literally could not put it down!  This book is a true story about a four-year-old boy who went to heaven for “three minutes” during an emergency surgery he had for his appendices.   His parents start to unravel information about Colton’s journey to heaven through many conversations over a course of several years.  The information this little boy knows is shocking, like the fact his met his unborn sister in heaven.   (His sister was a miscarriage his mom had a hard time dealing with.)  Or learn about how Colton met his grandpa “Pop” who died before he was born.  Colton also describes Jesus and the family finds a picture that finally matches what he sees.  The picture is amazing!  The information he tells his parents is not only shocking, but inspirational!  This is a MUST read for anyone who has ever doubted or just wondered what Heaven is like.  I have always believed in God, Jesus our Savior, and heaven, but this just seals the deal.  Read about heaven through the eyes of a child and discover that “Heaven is for Real”!

The Final Summit--By: Andy Andrews

This story starts when you meet a man named David Ponder who is coping with the loss of his wife.  David is a very successful business man who lost everything in bankruptcy and regained his business again.  He is visited by the archangel Gabriel, for a second time in his life, with a mission to save humanity from God wiping the slate clean again and change humanity as we know it.  David meets several past travelers, famous folks from history like Winston Churchill, to help answer the question that will save civilization.  Will David and the other travelers answer the question God posing correctly to save the world?  You will have to pick up this wonderfully written page turner for yourself to see if David conquers this quest.  I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense, loves learning about history, hearing about God’s grace and finding a book that is hard to put down.  I have not read the books prior to this one, but will after reading this!  Andrews does a fantastic job recapping events from the previous stories to help make the book flow without having the prior knowledge.  Pick this book up soon along with the others in this series: The Noticer and The Traveler's Gift.
